One way we do this is by acknowledging and participating in international space-related observance days. These events not only commemorate significant milestones in space exploration but also inspire future generations to look to the stars.

March 15 – World Contact Day

Initiated in 1953 by the International Flying Saucer Bureau, World Contact Day encourages enthusiasts to attempt telepathic communication with extra-terrestrial life. March 23 – World Meteorological Day

Established by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), this day celebrates the establishment of the WMO in 1950 and highlights the importance of meteorology in our daily lives. (wmo.int)

April 10 – Pōwehi Day (Hawai‘i)

Pōwehi Day commemorates the first-ever image of a black hole, captured by the Event Horizon Telescope in 2019. The black hole was named “Pōwehi,” a Hawaiian term meaning “embellished dark source of unending creation.” (imiloahawaii.org)

April 12 – International Day of Human Space Flight

Declared by the United Nations, this day marks the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s historic 1961 spaceflight, the first human journey into space. This day is also known as Cosmonauts Day in some parts of the world. – Find the link to the UN page about this day here.

April 12 – Yuri’s Night

Known as the “World Space Party,” Yuri’s Night celebrates human space exploration with events held worldwide. This event does not only commemorate the first human in space, but also the launch of the first Space Shuttle on 12 April 1981. – Find all information about all Yuri’s Night events around the world here

April 22 – Earth Day

Although not necessarily a space day, Earth Day celebrates everything about planet Earth! The Earth Day Network also known as EARTHDAY.ORG has been mobilizing over 1 billion people annually on Earth Day, and every other day, to protect the planet. All info, obviously, on earthday.org

April 24 – China National Space Day

Established in 2016, this day commemorates the launch of China’s first satellite, Dongfanghong-1, in 1970. It showcases China’s achievements in space exploration. – Find more info about this increasingly popular day in China here

First Friday of May – National Space Day (USA)

Initiated in 1997 by Lockheed Martin, this day promotes STEM education and honours achievements in space exploration. There is no dedicated central website about this celebration, but here is some more info.

May 3 – International Sun Day

Sun Day celebrates the Sun’s significance in our solar system and its impact on Earth. It’s a day to appreciate solar energy and its potential. Started in 1978 in the US, it was declared international in 1994. – Here is more info

May the 4th – Star Wars Day

May the fourth be with you! Star Wars Day is an informal commemorative day observed annually on May 4 to celebrate the Star Wars media franchise created by filmmaker George Lucas. Observance of the day spread quickly through media and grassroots celebrations since the franchise began in 1977. – Info on Wikipedia here

April/May and September/October – International Astronomy Day

Observed twice a year, this day encourages public interest in astronomy through events and educational programs. IN 2025 these days are on May 3rd and September 27th, but this differs slightly every year. – All info can be found here

June 5, 2025 – Galactic Tick Day

An educational day marking the Solar System’s movement around the Milky Way, occurring every 1.7 years, making the exact date vary wildly from year to year. – All info about this tick event is here

June 30 – International Asteroid Day

Recognized by the United Nations, this day raises awareness about asteroid impact hazards and promotes planetary defence. – All info about this fast growing awareness event (with a special mention of Luxembourg) is here.

July 20 – International Moon Day

Commemorates the anniversary of the first human landing on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. At the 64th UN COPUOS meetings in 2021 this was made an international celebration. – Find all events around the world (and the Moon) here

August 23 – National Space Day (India)

To commemorate the historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon on 23 August 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement to observe August 23 as National Space Day. All info can be found on this colourful website here

October 4–10 – World Space Week

The largest annual space event globally, celebrating science and technology’s contributions to human development. This is the biggest annual celebration of space in the world, with well over 20,000 events in most countries in the world, under a different space-theme every year. November 8 – National STEM/STEAM Day (USA)

Encourages students to explore and pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (and Space!). Founded in 2015 by the National Day Calendar and MGA Entertainment. – Find all info here

December 16 – Italian National Space Day

The Day, established in 2021, celebrates the launch of the first Italian satellite, San Marco 1, which took place on 15 December 1964, thanks to which Italy was the third country in the world to exceed the Earth’s atmosphere. – All info here
