From SES to New Space

Luxembourg’s journey into space began in 1985 with the founding of SES, now the world’s largest communications satellite operator. This bold move, driven by a vision to diversify the economy, set the stage for a thriving innovation cluster. The government’s ongoing commitment has attracted new players, fostered public-private partnerships, and enabled the sector to expand into new frontiers such as asteroid mining and in-space manufacturing.

The country’s accession to the European Space Agency in 2005 accelerated growth and international collaboration. Initiatives like SpaceResources.lu have made Luxembourg a pioneer in the legal and commercial frameworks for space resource utilization, attracting global investors and innovators.
